Summer 2027

This course surveys the art, architecture, archaeology and history of Greece and Rome from their origins in Bronze Age to their transformation in the late Roman Empire using methods of history, art history, archaeology and literary studies.

Includes the study of ancient cities and sanctuaries, the spread of Hellenism, and the formation of an imperial visual language in the Roman period. In addition, the influence of Etruscan and Greek art in the Roman Republic will be investigated, as well as Imperial monuments in the city of Rome and throughout the empire as instruments of power. The class will consider political and social factors in the formation and utilization of Classical forms in both ancient and modern times.

This course is confirmed for Summer 2027. Applications will open on Dec. 2 with the primary application window closing on January 15. It is highly recommended to apply early as most programs utilize rolling admissions and can close prior to January 15.

PROGRAM EXPENSES

Summer Block Tuition: $6,470 or use of Wild Card Grant

Program Fee: $5,500

Fee includes lodging, meals, all group activities & excursions, and international travel & health insurance coverage. Airfare to/from Rome is not included, but is calculated into the program expense for aid awards.

FINANCIAL AID

Wild Card Grant: The Wild Card is an automatic grant towards a student's first 蘑菇视频 summer class (on or off campus). If this off-campus summer block is a student's first 蘑菇视频 summer course, the tuition charge will be matched by the grant, removing the charge and leaving only the program fee to be paid.

Block Away Aid: All students approved for this program by the January 15 App Window Closure Date will be reviewed for aid eligibility. Students who receive need-based aid at 蘑菇视频 will be eligible for a Block Away Aid Award. Priority is given to students seeking their 1st award at 蘑菇视频, with a 2nd award possible only if there are remaining funds.

Aid awards cover between 20% and 90% of the program's total expense (program fee + estimated airfare). Aid is distributed at the official start of Block A, which may mean that any funds dedicated to the airfare cost serves as reimbursement as airfare should be purchased well before the program begins.

Students who apply or are approved for any block away after the closure of the primary application window should anticipate being placed on a waitlist for aid, as our aid pool is typically fully utilized by the students approved at the closure of the app window.

Course Expectations

Heightened Physical & Psychological Requirements for All Study Away: Study Away or Abroad can be a very different experience than an on-campus course, requiring both physical and mental adjustments which may not be typical for your on-campus experience. This includes requirements for physical activity such as more extensive physical movement (walking, touring, extended sedentary time during travel, etc.), requirements to manage luggage, often on uneven terrain such as cobblestone streets or buildings without elevators, or locations with limited medical facilities, potential extremes of weather and temperature. Housing options are also significantly different from an on-campus experience.

Some programs will use family homestays while others will require students live in pairs, triples, and quads. Travel is also inherently a stressful alteration to your normal routines, with greater flexibility, adaptability and resilience required, whether it is dealing with distinct cultures, language differences, feelings of “otherness” or lack of belonging, or simply greater ambiguity and unfamiliarity with surroundings. We recommend that all students consider these realities of study away and abroad as they consider programs. Below we will list any known expectations which the faculty have identified for their specific course.

Expectations for Study on this Program: This program requires extensive walking in museums and at archaeological sites, often in hot summer conditions. Students who may require support due to these expectations should speak with Prof. Thakur prior to application to ensure that appropriate support in Italy will be possible.
